When “Scream 4″ was announced - so was “Scream 5″ and “Scream 6″. Kevin Willamson had mapped out a new trilogy – with the recently-released “Scream 4″ the first chapter of it – though one that would be closely connected to the original three films. Obviously things changed a bit when Williamson left the movie half-way through (and was replaced by Ehren Kruger). Scream 4 cost the studio $40million to make and its already winding down at the box office and has only managed to bring in just over $30million.

Tobe Hooper Talks “DJINN”:

DJINN sees Khaled and Salama, an Emirati couple, returning home from the U.S. only to find the titular forces invading their apartment. Speaking to Rolling Stone, the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE director explains, “It’s the best screenplay that I’ve read in many years, and it was much more of what I’ve always wanted to do. It’s more of a metaphysical thriller, laced with extremely good characters."

The idea of Djinn is steeped within Muslim culture and something I’ve personally seen to be taken very seriously. On approaching the subject overseas, Hooper remarks, “I should say that I have done my very best in integrating into the culture. But yes, I had guidelines. You can’t just parachute into a new culture or place without having someone help you."

As far as the population’s willingness to discuss Djinn: “It’s in the Quran that God created men and he created Djinn. So they’re in parallel worlds, and you actually can’t be a believer in one thing without believing in the other. So there was no reluctance.”

On modern horror and working within it as a veteran: “A lot of films that I’ve seen made, particularly for the commercial market, in the U.S. have become more-or-less action films. Quite a lot of them anyway. There are a few films where a story is actually told. I take film as seriously as I did in the beginning, and I love it as much. It’s just that the world has changed. I’m not crystallized—I’m aware of that, and so I change with the world. At least, I do my best.

With similarities between his killing and the work of the Chef, Aaron is initially thought to be the prime suspect in the serial killings. LionsGate Scores Distribution Rights To Barry Levinson’s Found Footage Eco-Horror Film "THE BAY":

From the Press Release

Lionsgate Takes Us to The BayLIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, today announced that it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Barry Levinson’s found footage eco-horror film THE BAY from Alliance Films. The announcement was made jointly by Joe Drake, President of the Motion Picture Group, and Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions.

From the producers of the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise, the film is the next installment in their series following INSIDIOUS, and chronicles an unprecedented biological disaster unleashed from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay- an isopod parasite, carrying a horrific untreatable disease, that jumps from fish to human hosts. The true horror and scope of the event unfolds on footage captured on home videos and the internet by the town's victims.
“Ingenious genre films are and always will be a specialty at Lionsgate,” explained Drake of the choice to acquire the film. “THE BAY is a shining example of the kind of truly fresh horror film that audiences are always ready for, and that we excel at eventizing with them. Thanks to Barry, we’ll all be afraid to go in the water for years to come.”
Adds Constantine, “We have been big admirers of Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli since their breakout hit PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, and are thrilled to be in business with them. This film works so effectively because it establishes a very natural, everyday world, places the audience intimately within it, and then sits back as everything takes a horrific turn. Barry has incorporated found footage to the most satisfying possible effect, and it’s all the scarier for not relying on anything supernatural.”

“It’s exciting to see a company like Lionsgate embrace The Bay so enthusiastically. The found footage / multiplatform approach opened up the film to creative possibilities I hadn’t encountered in my previous films, and I think these sorts of films will only continue to push boundaries as the technology changes,” said director Barry Levinson.
The film was directed by Levinson, from a script he co-wrote with Michael Wallach. THE BAY was produced by Levinson, Jason Blum, Steven Schneider, and Oren Peli, and co-produced by Mythodic Films, with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Jason Sosnoff, Colin Strause, and Greg Strause executive producing.

THE BAY is an Alliance presentation in association with IM Global. IM Global handled foreign sales, and Alliance will distribute in Canada, the UK and Spain.
The deal was negotiated by Lionsgate’s Constantine, with Eda Kowan, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, and Wendy Jaffe, Executive Vice President Business & Legal Affairs for Acquisitions. The sale was brokered on behalf of Alliance by ICM and CAA. ICM packaged the film and represents Levinson and Wallach.

REMAKE ALERT: THEY LIVE

Deadline is reporting that Matt Reeves who directed Cloverfield and the remake of Let the Right One In is once again heading back to remake land. He will be remaking the ultimate cheesefest John Carpenters They Live.

Matt Reeves will both write and direct the project for Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures. The original film is b-movie scifi magic and tells the story of a man who finds a set of glasses which reveal that the whole world is taken over by aliens. Matt Reeves really feels he can make the movie his own and even uses the words ‘romance’ in it. He tells Deadline quote;

“I saw an opportunity to do a movie that was very point-of-view driven, a psychological science fiction thriller that explores this guy’s nightmare,” Reeves told me. “There could be a desperate love story at the center of this. Carpenter took a satirical view of the material and the larger political implication that we’re being controlled. I am very drawn to the emotional side, the nightmare experience with the paranoia of Invasion of the Body Snatchersor a Roman Polanski-style film.”

First Pic's From "THE TOOLBOX MURDERS 2":

THE TOOLBOX MURDERS 2 is not your typical sequel. The bloodthirsty Toolbox Killer is still slicing and dicing victims, but the follow-up to Tobe Hooper’s 2004 TOOLBOX MURDERS remake is an entirely different film, with new characters, a new storyline and a new director. Accomplished makeup-FX-artist-turned-director Dean Jones is determined to set a new standard with this sequel, utilizing a popular genre motif.

“I wanted to create a mystical horror story revolving around a few choice characters, focusing on the inhumanity and suffering of a woman whose faith and will to live are tested beyond average human capability. This woman is transformed into an inhuman but sympathetic character who will survive and kill, but is equally strong. I also wanted to explore this film visually, and make it a sensory experience, using interesting and artistic cinematic techniques.”

Val Kilmer Talks Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt Now and Sunrise:

Val Kilmer, recently spoke to Interview Magazine and spoke a little about the film.

“It’s a Halloween extravaganza. There’re dogs and vampires. I play a writer who’s something like [author] Mario Puzo, or at least how Francis describes Puzo’s experience where he wrote The Godfather while he was waiting for inspiration for his masterpiece. My character is a guy who tossed off this book about witches, and it became a big deal, and now he’s known as doing these silly witch books and he’s on hard times now looking for inspiration.”
Also the reported 3D segments are said to happen during a few dream sequences within the film simply to elevate the scene and make it memorable.

Val Kilmer joins Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, David Paymer and Ben Chaplin.

Filmmakers talk Steve Niles film “REMAINS” To Fangoria:

Written by Niles and illustrated by Kieron Dwyer, REMAINS - is set in Reno, Nevada and concerns a group of survivors holed up in a casino and battling a zombie plague. Colin Theys and John Doolan, who respectively helmed and scripted BANSHEE!!! and the upcoming ALIEN OPPONENT for Synthetic Cinema (which is producing REMAINS for Chiller), are excited to be tackling the film version. “Working from the source material has been a great experience,” Theys tells Fango. “The graphic novel actually had a pretty solid structural foundation for a movie; nothing major had to be changed. It has given us a great point to revolve around. We all liked the story, the characters, setting and feel of the piece, so we have been using it to ground our goals and our ideas as we set out to turn the story into a bigger picture. Mostly, we’ve been trying to find ways to elaborate, add detail and add events before the events of the book to flesh it out into a a movie that works amidst the sea of zombie films out there.”

“Adapting an existing property was a completely different beast than developing one of our original ideas,” Doolan adds. “We wanted to stay true to what Steve and Kieron created, but at the same time make sure it fit with what Chiller wanted to achieve with these movies. The main plot, characters, action setpieces and even chunks of dialogue are taken directly from the graphic novel; essentially, we just expanded on it, creating a few additional characters and heightening the scare factor. Not everything that works in a comic can work in a feature, though, so Steve was great about giving us his thoughts and ideas as we continued to develop the story and decide exactly what we’d be able to pull off.”
