Filmmakers talk Steve Niles film “REMAINS” To Fangoria:

Written by Niles and illustrated by Kieron Dwyer, REMAINS - is set in Reno, Nevada and concerns a group of survivors holed up in a casino and battling a zombie plague. Colin Theys and John Doolan, who respectively helmed and scripted BANSHEE!!! and the upcoming ALIEN OPPONENT for Synthetic Cinema (which is producing REMAINS for Chiller), are excited to be tackling the film version. “Working from the source material has been a great experience,” Theys tells Fango. “The graphic novel actually had a pretty solid structural foundation for a movie; nothing major had to be changed. It has given us a great point to revolve around. We all liked the story, the characters, setting and feel of the piece, so we have been using it to ground our goals and our ideas as we set out to turn the story into a bigger picture. Mostly, we’ve been trying to find ways to elaborate, add detail and add events before the events of the book to flesh it out into a a movie that works amidst the sea of zombie films out there.”

“Adapting an existing property was a completely different beast than developing one of our original ideas,” Doolan adds. “We wanted to stay true to what Steve and Kieron created, but at the same time make sure it fit with what Chiller wanted to achieve with these movies. The main plot, characters, action setpieces and even chunks of dialogue are taken directly from the graphic novel; essentially, we just expanded on it, creating a few additional characters and heightening the scare factor. Not everything that works in a comic can work in a feature, though, so Steve was great about giving us his thoughts and ideas as we continued to develop the story and decide exactly what we’d be able to pull off.”
